Is God’s plan the optimal plan?

“God has a plan!” “Everything happens because God wills it!” “God knows the number of hairs on your head”

“God’s plan” figures large in Christian Theology. Everything works according to his will. Everything will be put right in the end. If you don’t understand why something happens, it’s because you can’t see the world from the perspective of an omniscient God.

But what exactly is the plan? There doesn’t seem to be a lot of specifics on what God ultimately wants to happen. Perhaps it’s about reconciling God and man – allowing man to enter his presence? If that’s the case then I would assume this would involve saving as many humans as possible to enter heaven – the optimal plan is to maximise the number of humans saved.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding the plan – in which case I’d love to hear alternative theologies – or perhaps we just don’t know. But if that is your theology – then I’d question if the plan appears in anyway to be optimal.

13 Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it. Mark 7:13-14

Would you say that more people will go to destruction than to eternal life? If so, then is that the best that God could do? It feels as though there might be some simple improvements that could have been made. Perhaps Jesus could have come a couple of thousand years earlier – perhaps to the people of Noah’s time to try and save them rather than drown them. Perhaps as well as Jesus – there could have been some later prophets to perform miracles to help save other generations – rather than just the people that were lucky enough to have some decent evidence. These are just off the top of my head – I’m sure an omniscient God could come up with a few more.
